- The call
- The power is out in a storm, you pulled the red cord and lowered the door by hand, and now you want to lock it. The slide bolt on the inside edge is welded in place by years of rust and refuses to budge.

It is a February morning and the key goes only halfway into the garage handle. Yesterday's melt ran down the door face and into the keyway, and overnight it set like glass.
What you have at the end is a lock that behaves like a lock. The bar slides home with a light push and a definite stop, it draws fully back behind the track edge when released so the door can travel, and the outside handle turns with two fingers rather than two hands. Rusted guides have been cleaned or renewed, fixings that had worked loose are anchored in solid material, and the cylinder takes its key without a fight. If an opener shares the door, the two have been set up so they cannot argue, and a note at the wall button says which comes first.

Scene 1
Before the lock is touched, the opener is disconnected and the door is lowered by hand until it rests on the floor. The technician checks that both bottom corners meet the concrete, that the top section sits flat against the header, and that the door is level across its width. Then the bar is sighted against its slot. If the two are out of step, the reason is looked for in the door: a settled slab, a loosened track bracket, a compressed bottom seal, snow or ice at the threshold, or an opener limit set to stop the door short. Sorting the door out first keeps a good lock from being replaced for a fault that lives elsewhere.
Scene 2
When door position is the cause, the fix goes to the door, not the lock. Track brackets that have loosened are tightened so the vertical track sits plumb and at the correct distance from the door. If the opener's down limit stops the door a little high, the limit is reset so the door rests on the floor. Bar guides are then repositioned or shimmed so each bar meets the centre of its slot with the door shut, and the slot is dressed with a file if a burr has formed. Only where a slot is genuinely in the wrong place is a new one punched, with the old one left clean.
Scene 3
The alternatives to a manual lock are worth knowing. Most wall consoles have a lock-out button that stops every remote from working while you are away, which is the everyday answer for a powered door. Some openers accept an automatic deadbolt that slides a bar into the track each time the door closes and withdraws it before the door opens, so the security of a manual lock arrives without the need to remember it. A keyed outside handle can also be connected to the opener's release for the day the power is out and you are on the wrong side of the door. None of these is required; they are simply options.

Yes. The decayed wood is cut back to sound material and a hardwood block or a steel backing plate is let in behind the handle and along the stile where the bar guides sit. The handle, mechanism and guides are then fixed to that new material with through-bolts rather than screws into soft grain, so the lock turns without rocking and the bars hold their line.
The lock, its bars and its guides all live on the door sections and the tracks, well away from the counterbalance, so the visit involves no winding or unloading of springs. Where a lock misses its slot because the door hangs crooked or sits high, the door's balance or a cable may be part of the story, and the technician points that out so it can be dealt with properly.
It is better replaced. Lock bars are spring steel, and once one has been bent by an opener pulling against it, it takes a set and tends to bind in its guide or kink again under load. New bar stock is cut to the door's width so the bar reaches through the track with a margin and pulls fully back when released. Both bars are set to the same throw.
