Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in BeechwoodThe bang you heard
at seven this morning.

A torsion spring letting go sounds like something fell in the garage, and then the door refuses to lift. If that happened in Beechwood today, we bring the matching spring, replace it as a pair when the door has two, check the cables and bearings beside it, and rebalance the door before we leave.

Winter is when garage doors in Beechwood fail most, so we prepare for it. Cold-rated lubricants, bottom seals that stay soft in the frost, spring tension checked before the freeze and opener force adjusted for a stiffer door. A door serviced in the autumn is a door that opens in January.

How a visit goes

Many of the homes we work in have doors older than the people living there. Extension springs without safety cables, wooden sections that have taken on water, openers made before safety sensors were standard.

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

    On our way

We agree a time that suits you and confirm what we will bring. If a photo helps, send one; a crooked door or a snapped spring is easy to spot.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 33 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 33% of homes in Waterloo were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Newer houses often have a double door over a two-car garage, which means a heavier door, a pair of torsion springs and cables that must be matched exactly. Replacing springs on these doors is done in pairs so the door lifts level and the opener is not fighting one side.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in Waterloo (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed garage use: workshops and storage in the detached homes, everyday parking and a tight squeeze in the attached ones. Sealed rollers and protected sensors suit the busy workshop door; a quiet opener and a well-balanced door suit the townhouse.

Your questions, answered

Should I lubricate the track to help the rollers?

No. The track is meant to be clean and dry; grease on the rail gathers dirt and makes the wheels slide rather than roll, which wears them faster and can contribute to a roller leaving the rail. Put a silicone spray made for garage doors, or a lithium grease, on the hinge pins, roller bearings and spring coils, wipe off the excess, and give the tracks nothing more than a damp cloth.

The wood around my lock is soft. Can it still be repaired?

Yes. The decayed wood is cut back to sound material and a hardwood block or a steel backing plate is let in behind the handle and along the stile where the bar guides sit. The handle, mechanism and guides are then fixed to that new material with through-bolts rather than screws into soft grain, so the lock turns without rocking and the bars hold their line.

What information helps when I call?

Where the damage is, at floor level, near the curve or overhead; what caused it if you know, such as a bumper or a ladder; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway; whether any roller has come out of the channel; whether there is a spring above the door or springs along the tracks; and the door's rough size. A photo of the damaged length and of a bracket with its screws is very useful.

Why did the cable come off the drum?

A cable leaves its drum when it goes slack for a moment while the drum keeps turning. The usual reasons are the door closing onto an object or a ridge of ice so the bottom stops early, a spring that has lost tension or broken, or a drum whose set screws let it slip on the shaft. The technician finds which of these happened and corrects it so the new cable stays seated.
