Emergency Release Repair: preparing for the visit

Someone pulled the cord last spring to get a car out during an outage, and the door has never properly rejoined the opener.

Every part checked, every cycle tested.

Someone pulled the cord last spring to get a car out during an outage, and the door has never properly rejoined the opener. Press the button and the trolley glides along the rail by itself while the door stays exactly where it is.

Worth answering before the call

Roughly how old is the opener, and can you read the model label? Where was the door when the release was pulled, and where is it now? Has the trolley ever been left disconnected for a stretch of manual use?

What should I tell you when I call?

What the release did: handle missing, cord snapped, trolley will not reconnect, door let go on its own. Where the door was at the time and where it is now. Whether the opener is a chain, belt or screw unit on a rail, or a wall-mounted one beside the door. Whether there is an outside key release and whether you have its key. And whether the garage has a side door or a door into the house. That shapes what comes on the truck.

How do I keep the door in manual mode during a long outage?

On many rails, pull the cord straight down and then back toward the opener; the lever stays in the released position until you return it, so the trolley will not catch the door on its own. On others the trolley simply stays free until the opener is run. Lift and lower the door by its handle and use the slide bolt or manual lock to hold it shut. When power returns, reconnect first, then use the wall control.
